It hit me today that I have officially been working from home for 9 months today. WHAT?! I can’t believe that much time has passed.
If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you probably saw that I snuck away for a few days early December to go on a much needed trip. I went to Puerto Vallarta, with the same friend I visited in Palm Springs (you can read about that trip here). Anyway, we indulged for 5 straight days so I’m back to #saladlife. I’ve been burnt out on cooking lately so I have been trying to come up with the easy meals, while still maintaining a balance between salads and well, wine… it is Aldi advent calendar season you know! 😉
The inspiration of this Gyro salad came from my college days back at Ohio University. We had a little place call Souvlaki’s where we could get late night gyros. I loved getting a late night gyro even though I always remember them being always being so messy. I was on my way home, so a little mess never mattered anyway! 🙂

Let’s get into the details of this Gyro Salad because it’s a gooooood one! This recipe includes a homemade dressing for the salad in addition to a Greek yogurt sauce. All of the flavors are so fresh, yet so light, but leave you feeling satisfied all at the same time. This is a much cleaner way to still eat all of the delicious flavors I love from traditional gyros. The only thing missing from my salad is a nice big piece of warm thick pita. I’ve never made my own pita, so I guess that’s something to try this winter.
Here’s what you’ll need for this salad:
Gyro Salad:
- 2 Gyro slices Trader Joe’s
- Mixed greens
- cucumbers quartered
- cherry tomatoes halved
- red onion thinly sliced
- feta cheese
- peperoncino
Salad Dressing:
I love making homemade dressing because I can control the ingredients and use just want I need. It’s light, fresh, and easy to make. This dressing calls for only 4 ingredients, which you probably already have on hand at home.
If I’m being honest, I never really measure the dressing. I just eye ball it based on how many servings I’m making. I’d suggest doing 2 parts olive oil to 1 part red wine vinegar.
- olive oil
- red wine vinegar
- oregano
- pepper
Yogurt Sauce:
This sauce makes this salad. It’s creamy from the yogurt, salty from the feta, and fresh from the squeezed lemon juice. I could eat this sauce with a spoon or dip warm pita in it. I find this to be a little less “runny” than traditional Tzatziki sauce. Plus I always have these ingredients on hand so it’s easy to whip up.
- Greek yogurt
- lemon juice
- oregano
- pepper
- feta cheese

Where can I find Gyro slices?
I buy pre-sliced gyro meat from Trader Joe’s. I have not seen this meat at other retailers, but to be honest I also haven’t searched very hard since I buy it regularly from TJs. If y’all have seen this in other stores, let me know and I will update this post with other Gryo slice sightings.
What other toppings could I add to this salad?
There are many other toppings you could add to this salad. Here are some other recommendations worth trying:
- olives and any kind
- thick warm pita bread
- grilled chicken instead of gyro meat
- traditional Tzatziki sauce
- chickpeas
- fresh dill

I found a ten pound package of frozen gyro meat on Amazon. It arrived still-frozen in a styrofoam box and dry ice. It’s VERY tasty!! I did plan for its arrival and used my vacuum sealer to divide it into 10 packages. I have one thawing right now to make this recipe tonight.
I wouldn’t have even thought to check Amazon, great idea! I can’t wait to hear what you think of this recipe. Enjoy!!
